lyrics
In the Bleak Midwinter

Words: Christina G. Rossetti, 1830-1894
Music: Gustav Holst, 1874-1934
Tune: CRANHAM, Meter: Irr.
Arranged and performed by Allison Crowe

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
snow had fallen, snow on snow,
in the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Heaven cannot hold Him, nor the earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall welcome Him when he comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
for the Lord Incarnate, Jesus Christ.

Angels and archangels sang their praises there,
cherubim and seraphim gathered in the air;
but his Mother Mary, in her maiden bliss,
worshiped the Beloved only with a kiss.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
if I were a Wise One, I would do my part;
yet what I can I give him: give my heart
yet what I can I give him: give my heart.
